Bestseller lists and bookshop display tables are stacked high with volumes promising answers to questions about race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While many, such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211231144945\/https:\/\/www.penguin.com.au\/books\/how-to-be-an-antiracist-9781847925992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How to be an Antiracist<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211231144945\/https:\/\/www.hachette.com.au\/layla-saad\/me-and-white-supremacy-how-to-recognise-your-privilege-combat-racism-and-change-the-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Me and my White Supremacy<\/a>, are by Black authors, their intended readership is white. This audience perceives race as a mysterious topic despite the fact that its logics ground the political, social and economic systems of the settler colonies and the European nations that birthed them. White people are to be gently inducted into this knowledge so as not to pierce their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211231144945\/https:\/\/www.penguin.com.au\/books\/white-fragility-9780141990569\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fragile<\/a>&nbsp;egos and turn them away from their job of being good antiracist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211231144945\/https:\/\/www.indigenousaction.org\/accomplices-not-allies-abolishing-the-ally-industrial-complex\/comment-page-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">allies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Writing as long-time race critical educators and researchers, we are concerned about this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211231144945\/http:\/\/hoodcommunist.org\/2020\/09\/24\/on-the-anti-racist-economy-its-failures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dominant framing<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211231144945\/https:\/\/handbook.unimelb.edu.au\/2019\/subjects\/aind20009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">racial literacy<\/a>, and its translation in the Australian context. Misconceptions about the history and politics of race are not surprising given the lack of will in Australian education to invest in teaching and research on race and racism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking at the universities, there is an almost complete\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211231144945\/https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/1440783313504051\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dearth of units<\/a>\u00a0that tackle race as any more than an item on a laundry list of inequalities. There has also been a failure to recruit Indigenous and other racialised specialists to teach on it. Rather, as <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211231144945\/https:\/\/www.rmit.edu.au\/contact\/staff-contacts\/academic-staff\/m\/moreton-robinson-professor-aileen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aileen Moreton-Robinson<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211231144945\/https:\/\/uapress.arizona.edu\/book\/critical-indigenous-studies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has noted<\/a>, Indigenous scholars in particular are cloistered outside of the disciplines in Indigenous Studies where a culturalist approach is more accepted by institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This poses a problem for the attempt to provide education about ongoing racism. While the problem is systemic, it is incumbent on the educators who are currently putting themselves forward to do racial literacy not to replicate the problems that Moreton-Robinson or Professor&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211231144945\/https:\/\/people.unisa.edu.au\/Lester.Rigney\" target=\"_blank\">Lester Irabinna-Rigney<\/a>&nbsp;have warned against.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211231144945\/https:\/\/www.croakey.org\/improving-racial-literacy-what-will-it-take\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read the rest of the article at the Croakey website<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alana Lentin and I wrote an article for Croaky Magazine on the need for racial literacy in Australian schools.
